The Road to Borrego Springs

Borrego Springs, California: Get used to this dateline, Diligent Reader. We hope to stay here for several weeks! And by hope, I mean, I hope someone cancels their camping reservation at this RV resort so we can stay here several weeks. There is only myself to blame. I have told so many people about lovely Borrego Springs, that now there is barely a campsite to be found! Word is spreading.

We DT had a very easy (130 miles) drive to Borrego Springs from Yuma today. Mostly flat. One agricultural inspection station and two border patrol check-points. We are now back in the pacific time zone. The temperatures were in the low 70's and there wasn't a cloud in the sky!

DT only made one stop - and this stop is becoming a tradition. We love to stop at the Cardenas Market in El Centro, California. Cardenas is a chain of Mexican grocers in the SW. They have less than thirty stores, and cater to the grocery, butcher and produce needs of the local Mexican-American population.

The bakery is massive and Cardenas sells a vast assortment of colorfully decorated cakes and pastries. This cake has pink meringue icing.

This cake is too pretty to eat.

DT can't resist the temptation and always buys a few cookies. Today he bought payaso(clown) cookies. He is always disappointed in the texture (the cookies have kind of a "shortening" aftertaste on the roof of your mouth), but I think he is trying to find the cookies he used to enjoy so much when we visited Mazatlan so often in the 90's.

We again found great produce at ridiculously low prices - avocados 5 for $1, green onions 33¢, a huge bag of jalapeno peppers for 50¢ - but we were not here for groceries.

We came for chicken!

Cardenas sells whole rotisserie chickens for $7. I will guarantee you this chicken was not organically-raised and may have never seen the light of day, but whatever they do to the chickens at Cardenas is addictive!

Tortilleria at Cardenas Market in El Centro, California

We always pick up a pollo entero (whole chicken), a stack of still-warm flour tortillas and go back to the Magna Peregrinus and eat lunch in the parking lot! Seriously - if I had to smell that chicken any longer than the time it takes to walk from the store to the RV... well... it would not be pretty.

Come to Momma!

When we set-up camp in our reserved (for five nights and praying...) campsite at The Springs at Borrego RV Resort & Golf Course, our internet satellite dish locked on with a relatively high signal-strength. How long into the afternoon the signal will last is a mystery, so I am posting a very early edition of RVGoddess.com today!

We will remain in this evening.

I think chicken is on the menu.

Until my next update, I remain, your Borrego Springs correspondent.

FROM OUR CAMPING JOURNAL RV LOG BOOK: The Springs at Borrego RV Resort & Golf Course. One of our very favorite RV parks on the west coast. Sites are large and each has a nice cement patio and picnic table. Cement 50 amp pull-throughs will full service. There are also different varieties of citrus trees all over, so you will never be lacking for a cocktail garnish in the winter. Slow wifi. Fabulous warm pool and many hot tubs - all from their own hot springs! Fitness center, library, community rooms. Regulation 9-hole golf course. Recycling. Huge fenced dog park! We are paying $64 per night for a "premium" site.
