The Real Leo + HomeState

My last day in Los Angeles was another whirl-wind of activity. No work or school today due to the 4th of July holiday, but everyone worked-out and then Lisa, Leo and I went to a local mall to run a few errands and purchase a summer hat for Leo.

Leo totally rocks his new lid! So fashionable. (His shirt reads "track star".) However, the Real Leo showed-up on my camera in other "new hat" poses:

Boys!

Before the kids drove me to the airport, we had lunch at a place I have been wanting to try for months... but we never seem to get over to HomeState. (Go to their website and to see the photo of patrons streaming out the door. This is exactly how we found the restaurant today.) HomeState serves up Texan/Mexican-style (Austin, specifically) breakfasts. Migas (tortillas, scrambled eggs, meats, cheeses, etc.) and breakfast tacos. They are open from 8a-3p seven days a week. Vegans need not apply - HomeState offers but one salad (kale, naturally) and one vegetarian (potato) taco. This is a restaurant operated by Texans. Brisket rules.

Lonestar Migas from HomeState in Los Angeles, California

I ordered the "Lonestar" migas: crispy corn strips, scrambled with eggs and onions, with shredded brisket, cheddar and pico de gallo. $8. Could barely finish half.

Brisket Sandwich from HomeState

Lenny went old-school and ordered the Brisket Sandwich ($9): Shredded brisket, cabbage slaw, guacamole, pickled jalapeno on Texas toast.

We also tried a chicken taco and a brisket taco. We loved everything. Lisa was not too impressed, but Lisa ordered the kale salad, so I am not counting her vote. Lenny and I vow to return, and I can't wait to bring DT to HomeState.

Three night trip to Los Angeles, three new restaurants. This could be some-sort of record.

I am now back in Portland, returning in time to cook a nice Shabbat meal for my husband (who did the weekend grocery shopping from a list I emailed last night). Happy to be home, though Portland is 20+ degrees warmer than Los Angeles (I know, strange, eh?). I miss my grandbabies so much already!

May you all have a safe and fun Independence Day weekend. Happy Birthday, America!

Until my next update, I remain, your "back to My Home State" correspondent.
