Indio, California: The veggies and herbs have been planted - a full three weeks earlier than last year.
It is amazing how much we enjoy the herbs from these three pots - and amazing how many tomatoes we harvested last year.
The pots are irrigated on a timer. Mint and oregano made it over the summer (seasons are switched here - with the concern being that your plants will survive the 120° summers). I added a Roma tomato, rosemary and dill.
Nothing survived the summer in the center pot, so I filled it with a cherry tomato (my first cherry tomato plant ever), basil, sage and Italian parsley.
Obviously the thyme made it through the summer and now supplies all the neighbors with the fragrant herb. Dave thinks it is a mess, but I think it is pretty. I added another Roma tomato.It will be fun to watch the garden grow - and so much more convenient to snip off a sprig of basil or rosemary rather than purchasing those plastic containers from the grocer.
Other activities of the day included watching (TV) the Ducks beat the Beavers - always fun - in basketball. GO DUCKS!
Late afternoon, we took a cruise around the resort in our golf cart and saw this:
We could not find an owner, nor anyone to explain why this VW bus was parked on the street - but she was simply gorgeous and completely restored. The front windows open "out"!Remember a few weeks ago when we stopped to the Mexican grocery chain, Cardenas, on our way from Yuma to Borrego Springs and bought a grilled chicken? That bird fed us several meals and then I boiled the bones with an onion, cilantro and a jalapeno to make a Mexican-inspired stock, added the meat from a breast and froze the concoction. This evening I added a can of diced tomatoes and a handful of rice to make a simple healthy soup. Kinda like "tortilla soup with rice" or something...
Garnished with crushed tortilla chips, avocado and cilantro, it was a very nice dinner - and there is enough for lunch Monday as well. One bird, ten meals.SLOGGER REPORT: 4 miles, "around the block".
