Sisters, Oregon

Bend, Oregon: It was 52 degrees inside our RV when we woke this morning. Space heater deployed! But it was sunny. Meanwhile in Italy, the kids are still roasting, but are now by the sea, swimming and enjoying beach life. And gelato.

We spent the day in Sisters with our sister-in-law Ali. My Brother Rick is fishing in Montana. (Well, in reality, Brother Rick is NOT fishing anywhere. His usual fishing spot has received so much rain the rivers are silty and flooded and too dangerous for fish or fishers. He is probably hanging out with his usual fishing posse, swapping fish stories.)

Sunday is market day in Sisters, so we met Ali there. For such a small town (3000+), the. market is very impressive. Craft people and bakers as well as farms selling their produce.

I choose radishes, broccoli, and a cucumber from this farmer.

They were also selling gorgeous Oregon strawberries, raspberries and cherries. We found a nice loaf of bread, and looked through all the honey, woven baskets and jewelry. It was sunny, but about 55° and really windy.

After our shopping (we brought our collapible cooler and an ice pack), we drove back - nearly to Bend - with Ali as she said we had to try the pizza at Pisano's. Between Sisters and Bend is a great turn-out with a perfect view of The Three Sisters mountains... so here are two sisters-in-law posing with three sisters:

By the way: though dang-near July, it snowed on the sisters last night!

Ali was completely correct to drive all this way for pizza. It was just fantastic. Woodfired ovens, crispy chewy crust. Someone know what they are doing. Just delicious. We had salads and pizza.

Back at the RV park, we just tried to keep warm. I stitched and DT watched the golf tournament(s). I had chicken thighs marinating in the herbs from our garden that had made it to Oregon (rosemary and basil), garlic, lemon juice (frozen cube, but from our garden) and white wine. They were roasted in our Barbie oven at 390° (because that is the highest the dang thing will go) with the fresh broccoli. Yummy - and plenty of leftovers for a pasta-something. Dare I say it: casserole?

Until my next update, I remain, your well stocked correspondent.

  1. The weather can certainly be so different in a state as large as Montana! When I read your “the rivers are silty and flooded…….” I thought “what???” We live in south central Montana and have had little to no rain the last couple of weeks, No flooding here but in the western part of the state I read, it’s a different story. Envious of your produce from the farmer’s market!
