After our vegan Shabbat, we had vegetarian houseguests over the weekend. Sadly, the weather did not cooperate with our Southern Californian visitors. It has been raining for two days. Back to sweaters. It really is getting ridiculous, don't you think?
We are throwing in the towel and heading out for a few weeks in the RV tomorrow.

I took a much needed Day of Rest yesterday and only ran 2 miles today. Why? I think injured the little toe on my right foot yesterday. Apparently it is not a good idea to kick a drawer closed when you are barefoot. Especially if you are blind in one eye and have very poor depth perception. Ouch. I am not a doctor
and I don't play one on TV, so I can't say for sure the toe is broken. However, right now my toe is the same color as the "60" in the above photo. And it hurts. Like hell. Swollen too. So, I only ran 2 miles today and I ran slower than molasses... but I am back on schedule to run 60 miles in July in my pledge to help our local food bank.
Painful miles for charity!
Back to reality: our guests are friends of Lisa. Ryan lives in Los Angeles, but went to The George Washington University with The Lovely Lisa in Washington, DC. They have been friends for years. Ryan, on a road trip (to Vancouver, BC) with a friend, decided Taylor Manor would be a good over-night stop for a home-cooked meal and a chance to see where Lisa grew up.

On their way north, Ryan and Lindsay stopped in southern Oregon to see the
Oregon Vortex. I visited the Oregon Vortex myself once.... about fifty years ago with my parents and siblings! This tourist spot has been around since 1930, yet I have no idea if it is a vortex or a tourist trap. Ryan felt it was "something". Lindsay thought it was a hoax. Either way, they are each $9.75 poorer.
I'm on Team Lindsay.

Do you remember in April,
when I made Arugula Pesto with Pistachio nuts? It was a very good recipe and I read a few days ago arugula pesto can be even better if you blanch the arugula first. So tonight I did just that. Honestly, I couldn't tell the difference, so I advise you leave-out the whole blanching step. I do advise you add about 1/3 cup (or more) white wine to the mélange.
And serve a little grated parmesan, please.

Ryan had seconds.
Nothing makes me happier than someone asking for seconds.

DT and I also served a freshly-baked (organic!) fruit crostata made with Bing cherries, Royal Ann cherries and blueberries. The crust was a mixture of white and whole wheat flour and a
whollotta butta. In my spare time, I made (organic!) vanilla bean ice cream.

After dinner, Ryan posed with a photo of Lisa (age 17).
We have an interesting adventure planned with Ryan tomorrow before we head out on a two-week RV trip, so check back.,
Until my next update, I remain, your
Colonial correspondent.
