Polesden Lacey

Surrey, England: Another day, another English Estate operated by the National Trustin Dorking, Surrey. However, the house we toured today is not a hotel, but is open to the public and we were able to wander around the rooms at our leisure, take photographs and ask volunteers 100 questions.

Side porch

Polesden Lacey was built in the late 1800's and purchased (and completely remodeled) in 1906 by socialite Mrs. Greville. Greville used Polesden Lacey as her weekend country home and entertained Kings, Queens and other cream of the social crop.

Front Entrance

We toured through the house - sitting rooms, tea room, music room, 9 bedrooms (each with ensuite baths), billiards room, dining room, etc. Each room was decorated with Mrs. Greville's personal belongings, art collection and furnishings. When she died in 1942, Greville left her 1400-acre state to the National Trust.

We also had a walk in the gorgeous gardens, which include a croquet lawn, orchards, extensive flower and vegetable beds. The veggies are used in the on-site restaurant.

The caretakers cottage

I had been in the UK three days and had yet to have fish & chips. I know, strange, right? After our tour, we visited The Red Lion Pub in Horsell for a pint and the famous dish - with mushy peas.

Perfect Day!

Until my next update, I remain, your touristy correspondent.
