Tamra & Steve Visit

La Quinta, California: Our old friends (since our Taipei days) flew from Portland to spend a long weekend with us. We golfed, had dinner at the clubhouse, went to the La Quinta Art Festival, went to brunch, went to the zoo, and watched the Ducks beat Wisconsin and watched the Chargers (ex-Oregon QB Justin Herbert at the helm) beat the Bengals. I only cooked dinner twice, (polenta with red sauce the first night, Butter Chicken the last) and made a big appetizer spread for the Duck 5p tailgate Saturday.

The Australian enclosure is a walk-through aviary-type thing with the birds flying overhead and wallabies hopping around at will. They also have Kookaburras (maybe sitting in the old gum tree?) - and they were laughing as the keeper fed them small (dead) white mice. Several interesting species of reptiles are also on display (but not slithering about under your feet).

I'm still hobbling quite a bit. The scratches on my leg are healing up nicely, but the big wound on my knee cap does not want to close-up... and it nearly impossible to not bend my knee, though I am trying. 18-holes were mostly walked due to the golf course grass being closed to carts for the first several weeks after opening for the season. That was not fun, but still I hobbled up and down all the aisles at the art fair and traipsed through the zoo. Total trooper.

Hope so anyway, because we are off to Los Angeles for Grandparents Day at school and I am sorry to say this will be our last Grandparents Day. Why? This celebration is only for the lower school kids and - are you sitting down? - Lucile begins middle school next year. Waaaaaah! How is this possible?

Until my next update, I remain, your healing correspondent.
