Medora, North Dakota: How are we already (six weeks away from home) in North Dakota? We were heading east anyway, but when the Theodore Roosevelt Presidential Library opened July 4th, we added this stop to our route. Though our "escaping the desert heat" thing isn't really working out, as it was 105° here and 110° at home.
Traveling from Miles City, Montana to Medora, North Dakota on Highway 94 (now we are back on the Lewis & Clark Trail as the two amigos split-up on the return trip so Clark could explore the Yellowstone River and the area that would eventually become Yellowstone National Park). It gets confusing, doesn't it?
Not long after leaving Miles City we came upon Terry, Montana. Dave felt we should stop. With a population of less than 600, there isn't a lot going on.
When I sent the above photo to My Sister, she replied that the town seems to check-off several things on my lists. True dat! Terry is on the Yellowstone River, has a famous hotel, The Kempton, and is home to English diarist and photographer, Evelyn Cameron.
Though the tavern is called the Roy Rogers, I do not think Terry is the place for this Terry. Too far from my (still at camp) grandchildren.
So we continued on, stopping at the WELCOME TO NORTH DAKOTA rest stop for a light lunch in our RV, arriving to Theodore Roosevelt National Park mid-afternoon. We entered the park immediately and did the 36-mile loop through the southern part of the park. Incredible landscapes of the Badlands, and we were lucky enough to see about 40 bison, wild horses, and a zillion and two Prairie Dogs (Lewis and Clark called them Barking Squirrels!).
With our slow travel, stopping so many times to pull-out the binoculars/camera, we didn't get back to Medora until nearly 5p. After doing a drive-by through the cute little western town, we went to our reserved campground to find it is very close (two blocks) from town and the city provides a trolly shuttle around town, and up to the library. Something tells me the Theodore Roosevelt Presidential Library opening a month ago is really going to change this town. This is the first time we have been to Theodore Roosevelt National Park!
I made vegetarian bowls with the jar of YUMM! sauce purchased while in Oregon. Perfect meal - no cooking required in 100+ degree Medora.
I looked at this photo and realized I forgot the sour cream. Dang.
