Oceanside, California: The Petit Peregrinus needed her first check-up, and - as long as we had her out of storage - decided to get out of plus-100-degree temperatures and spend a few days at the beach in Oceanside, California. (By the way, there were no issues found with the RV, but there was the usual lube-oil-filter and tire rotation for only $1500.)
The weather has been hot hot hot. Dave has golfed a few times, but I am either walking early or swimming in the evening. There were rumors of rain this past week, but all we had was this:

The grandkids have been living their best lives this summer. After finishing surf camp (they stayed in an Airstream trailer AirBnb!), they headed back east for a week at their great uncle's cabin on a lake. We have been getting videos of Leo waterskiing! He's pretty dang good too.

For dinner last week, I had prepared Italian-style beef meatballs, served with red sauce and grilled zucchini. We had a lot of leftovers, so smashed it all down into a bolognese sauce and popped it in the freezer. Since we were going to be camping in cooler climes this week, I knew the oven could be employed for our traditional "lasagna on the first night" of the trip.

The pan is only 6x6, but it made plenty of lasagna for our first night at the beach:

The drive to Oceanside was not fun. Since the city is basically directly west of us and there is a mountain range in the way, we decided to take a flatter route around the mountains. The highway between the Coachella Valley and the beach is famously twisty and steep. Not fun in a car (okay, maybe fun in a Lamborghini or something...), but no fun at all in a RV. Traffic was terrible, drivers were crazy - driving in the break-down lane. With the height of our RV, it is way too easy to see what drivers are doing in their vehicles, and too often it is texting.
So, we didn't arrive to our campsite until 5p and quickly found our site... which was at such an angle, it took us three tries to get semi-level (with our automatic leveling jacks) and had to use the yellow plastic blocks for the second time ever. Not only is our site not level, it is 40 feet away from a commuter rail line!

The train does sail past often, and since we are also four campsites away from the highway, blows a whistle several times as it crosses the road. Fun times! I'm sure we will get used to it, and apparently the line does not operate during the late night/early morning - or it did not wake us overnight.

Thankfully, all I had to do was pop that teeny lasagna into my Barbie oven and toss the salad (I had made at home).
Tomorrow we explore Oceanside by bicycle.
Until my next update, I remain, your cool correspondent.
