Not Princess Cays, Bahamas

Not Princess Cays, Bahamas: Note from late last night (who am I kidding - Dave and I were in bed at nine o’clock): We all had dinner together in the Santorini dining room. Tis a bit fancy with uniformed waiters, white table cloths and lots of cutlery. I had to beg Leo to remove his baseball cap… which is a new Bengals hat. He has not yet removed the hologram stickers from the brim… reminding me of Minnie Pearl, but not a reference Leo would understand. He did eat hatless. Our meals were delightful. Leo had a shrimp cocktail as his appetizer, then had a lobster tail for his entree. Everyone else enjoyed risotto, roasted chicken, salmon, linguine and clams, and delicious salads. Lucile ordered a hotdog!

New version of the Princess Love Boat Dream dessert

The famed dessert on Princess - for years - has been a little heart-shaped cake, covered in ganache and served over a puddle of raspberry sauce. Now the cake seems to be chocolate in the center, but surrounded by a raspberry (?) cake? Confused, it had a raspberry taste, but garnished with a strawberry and two hard chocolate pieces. Obviously more research is needed, but sad they messed with the classic.

Lisa and Lucile called it an early night after dinner, but I went with the boys to the main theater for the comedy show. Either the comedian wasn’t funny or we were too tired to enjoy his humor? We didn’t stay long.

Our stop today (Friday) was to a small island owned by the cruise line, not surprisingly called Princess Cay. The Enchanted Princess arrived at nine o’clock, but instead of sending passengers to shore via tenders, we just floated off-shore. Soon there was an announcement about how the sea was too rough to safely board passengers onto the tenders, so we needed to wait a bit until the seas calmed. I’m no sailor - and I don’t play one on TV - but the ocean was so calm. Everyone gathered in our cabin, waiting. Lucy and I were out on the deck enjoying the weather and view.

Finally it was determined the seas were too rough and the ship would simply continue to St. Thomas. Bummer! Tomorrow was to be an at-sea day, so now we had TWO full days at-sea. I’m fine, I am a needlepointer, but we had two very disappointed snorkelers to entertain.

In a situation like this, the crew go into high gear. New activities need to be arranged. More dining rooms need to be opened. Guests need to be entertained!

Dave and I were looking forward to a beach day, complete with burgers on the shore, so we had skipped breakfast. Leo wanted sushi (after all that fish last night!?!), so the 4L’s went to lunch at the sushi restaurant on Deck 6, while we went to Gigi’s on Deck 7 for pizza.

After lunch we gathered in a small theater for a trivia game. Four categories: cities, food, flags, general knowledge. 20 questions and we did not win. One team had 17 right! Very impressive. We did not know about the fermented shark in Iceland (do I want to know about the fermented shark in Iceland?), nor about birds with poisonous wings in Papua New Guinea. Lucile knew the flag of Columbia. We recognized Istanbul, Tokyo, and Nashville, but missed Bilbao and Copenhagen - and we’ve been to Copenhagen. Gheesh.

Though the kids swore they were too cool to attend the kids club onboard, once they went up to see it, immediately asked to be registered. The club for their ages (8-12) was loaded with video games, crafts, shuffleboard, pop-a-shot, movies, and all sorts of fun things to do. Dave and I were surprised to learn 113 kids had already been registered, when I don’t think we have seen ten other children on board. This ship has club rooms in several different age-group divisions and also offer babysitting.

So our afternoon was a bit quiet. I stitched. Dave read. Before dinner we met for drinks, then proceeded to one of the dining rooms. Same menu. Three different rooms. Always good food on Princess and the menus change daily. After dinner we all gathered in a lounge for some-sort of “guess the next line” of the song verse. So fun. The two South African emcees were hilarious, telling us all to NOT SING ALONG, but of course we all did so the contest wasn’t much of a contest. The winner (no prizes given) went to anyone stoopid enough to not get 100%.

Then, though it was getting well-on 10p, Leo and Lucile signed up to sing Dancing Queen during Karaoke. I think they may have practiced ahead. When introduced, they told the emcee they were from the North Pole, adding they needed a rest after making all those toys, so went on a Caribbean cruise. The kids then entered the stage from opposite sides, moon-walked towards each other and there was some-sort of cartwheel thing via Lucile. Again, no prizes given, but we all know who won.
