Monday Tourists

Chula Vista, California: The campground really emptied-out and we are still here. Still no (indoor) refinished dining chairs delivered to our house. We could go home, but why? The weather is just lovely.

Our plan for the day was to go to the waterfront (tourist) area of San Diego, walk along the pier (we have done this so many times), see what we could see and split some fish & chips at Sally's. Again, we rode the blue trolley and changed downtown to the green tolley and exited at the Seaport Village stop. Then we walked a block to the bayfront and walked north along the docks. There are several Navy ships in port - not sure if on leave or in for repairs.

Across the bay

The retired USS Midway is docked along the seawall and is open to tour. We have toured the ship - $39. Seems like quite a bit, but you will be there for several hours. There are many fighter jets on the flight deck to see, and you have access to nearly all of the ship - the kitchen, mess halls, officers quarters, the gigantic washer/dryers, and sailor's living quarters. We took the grandchildren when they were quite young and they really enjoyed "flying" the planes on the flight deck and checking out the bunk beds in the sleeping quarters. (Note: a visitor will need to maneuver over raised door openings below decks... or climb over if you are three years old.)

The USS Midway

Notice the two red funnels behind the USS Midway? I was pretty sure the white dots were Mickey Mouse ears, meaning a Disney cruise ship was in town. The Disney Magic was set to sail this afternoon for a five night trip with stops in Cabo San Lucas and Ensenada, Mexico. There were a ton of toddlers with their parents ready for five days of Disney Magic! So many of the girls were in their Disney princess costumes. I told one little girl that I had just seen Mickey Mouse board (I did not see this at all) and she was so excited.

Disney Magic

Then we retraced our steps, walked around the shops in Seaport Village and went to Sally's restaurant along the marina under the Grand Hyatt Hotel. We really do like this restaurant, and though a bit expensive, they have a beautiful setting with shady tables and a view to all the fancy hardware docked in the marina.

I always order the halibut fish & chips.
We split it today.

And we had a few interesting passengers on the trolley ride back to the campground:

Something different

I easily had 10000 steps, and spent the rest of the afternoon needlepointing poolside, while Dave read. Very relaxing, and there were only about ten people at the pool (and no children at all). After our big lunch, we had popcorn for dinner. DT watched the Monday Night Football game outside. His team (the 49ers) were playing Lenny's team (the Commanders), so a little family rivalry tonight. San Francisco won, and the temperature dropped enough we needed light sweaters.

Tomorrow we are moving.

Until my next update, I remain, your Chula Vista correspondent.
