Mid-Week Catch Up

La Quinta, California: I really can't much top a post where my grandson played a show at The Whiskey a Go Go. Just can't. Still smiling just thinking of his happy face on the stage.

So we are now back to our daily life. Not the "days drip slowly on the page" life Mr. Buffett sings on the beautiful Bruce Cockburn Pacing the Cage song. We are too busy for any dripping. Just after arriving back to the Coachella Valley from Leo's show, we prepared to watch the Kentucky Derby Saturday. Mint Juleps were served and after the races we had traditional Hot Browns. These rich open-faced sandwiches were originally served to late-night dancers in the 1920s at the iconic Brown Hotel in Louisville - and are still served today. I totally cheated by using frozen Texas toast, but stepped-it-up with homemade mornay sauce with Parmesan cheese, fresh sliced turkey, sliced tomatoes and (turkey) bacon.

Hot Brown

Sunday, I rode my fancy new bike 7 miles round-trip (take that, PeeWee Herman) to our local farmers market to fetch strawberries as this is just the perfect month in the Coachella Valley for gigantic juicy red-throughout strawberries... then we had brunch with Debbie & Mark, and then came home to prep dinner as My Cousin, Rachel, and her husband (also Dave) were coming for Cinco de Mayo. Wooosh! What a busy weekend!

Rachel & Dave

For sure, margaritas were involved, and we also served a whole grilled butterflied chicken (that had been hanging-out in our fridge for 24 hours in a Mexican-spice dry rub), chile rellano casserole, and a corn salad. Tres Leches cupcakes from Tiffany's Sweet Spot for dessert.

I've written this before... but our Mothers are/were sisters, the youngest of our grandmother's brood. Rachel's mother is the only sibling still living.

We golfed Monday. Tuesday is my "stay home" day where I get myself organized, the housekeepers come, and I tackle the ironing and other organizational things. Wednesday - more golfing:

A lovely day

Spring has sprung! Babies are everywhere. There are even teeny turtles in the lake on the 15th hole. The adults are a little smaller than a honeydew melon half, and the hatchlings look like the turtles we used to find the pet shops when we were kids. Shy little things do not like having their photograph taken - they jump into the water as soon as they see us.

One last thing: my PC has been giving me the dreaded black-flashing-screen-thing for several weeks. This morning, it would not even open. Luckily, I subscribe to Carbonite, so was able to restore my PC to its last moment, but this will not stop the coming demise. Dear Reader, I took the plunge and went over to the Dark Side. This post is coming to you from a Mac Book Air 13" thing. Brother Steve recently took the plunge as well and he talked me off the edge as the purchase was made. (And may I add? The cruise we took with the kids in January? It was booked through Costco Travel and they gave us a massive Costco gift card as an incentive and, well, it nearly covered the entire purchase!)

One more last thing. This site was "optimized" for ad revenue a few weeks ago - without my knowledge or permission. I HATE all the ads that are everywhere on my website and am trying to get things back to normal. Please be patient and I am so sorry.

Until my next update, your mac correspondent.

  1. As for me, your ads cover your blog, all but maybe 2 inches.
Don’t know if this is happening to others. It’s messed it up
    terribly.

  2. Looking for your Chile Rellano recipe. Could I have overlooked it in the recipe you have listed. Will you please share?
