Back to Borrego

Borrego Springs, California: QUICK UPDATE: Many emails/messages about my Baby Bro and Kris in Puerto Vallarta. They are safe. Made their scheduled flight out of PV - maybe one of the last flights before the airport shut down - and are back in Colorado... missing the sun and sand very much.

I am nearly embarrassed to write that while the entire east coast are suffering with record snowfall, we desert rats are suffering a record heat wave. No kidding. High 90s - freaky-high for February. (My tomatoes are very happy.) We needed to take our two-year-old Mercedes Sprinter to DEQ, and as long as the RV was being dragged out of her air conditioned garage, it was decided to give her a little exercise. 65 miles from our house - once again - to Borrego Springs. This town is a landlocked island in the middle of the largest state park in California, Anza-Borrego Desert State Park, and about 25 miles north of the Mexican border. Yes, we come here often (did you miss the part about the town being 65 miles from our house?), but there is so much to love about this place and the RV resort is top-notch as well. We will golf, visit the Farmers Market, and probably drive up to Julian for pie. Same thing we always do, but the desert looks different every time, the town changes constantly and there are miles of flat biking routes (we brought our bikes).

We are again at The Springs at Borrego RV Resort, where the natural spring water bubbling up is so hot, it needs to be cooled before it goes into the pools or hot tubs - and there is no sulphur smell.

Here We Are*

I followed My Driver in the Chevy, so we will have a vehicle (other than the Navion) during our many-night stay. After checking-in, we went for a walk around, but it seems not too much has changed, but everything looks very well maintained since we were here last time. The BIG NEWS is the water will be shut off resort-wide tomorrow from 10a-2p and there is a Dog Show on Saturday morning.

Cocktails outside tonight to enjoy the sunset. Just some nibbles and olives.

Sunset in Borrego

Dinner was - of course - lasagna. This time with spicy Italian chicken sausage in Rao's marinara sauce, plus a layer of ricotta with lemon zest. It was super good, served with a Caesar Salad.

No set plans for tomorrow, but as we have the day free and the water will be turned off, maybe a good day to head up to Julian? Especially as the weather is supposed to break all heat records tomorrow and Julian is over 4000 feet elevation. Why not?

Until my next update, I remain, your Borrego correspondent.

Campground Information: The Springs at Borrego RV Resort - we have a paved, full-service, pull-through site. There is a table, but oddly no chairs. Paying $90-something a night. This resort has everything (except chairs). Pool, hot tubs, fitness center, library, lots of activities, and a regulation (very decent) nine-hole golf course.

  1. Borrego Springs is one of our favorite places also….and – those Julian Pies and goodies from nearby Dudleys! We’ve always stayed at the Springs, but now there is no TV service whatsoever. Sigh….
