Casa Grande, Arizona: My Mother lost her 10-year fight with cancer one year ago today. Unbeknownst to us, this RV resort is having some sort of Cancer Awareness weekend. This morning thousands of luminaria were placed along the pretty palm-lined square across from the reception area. Every luminaria was decorated and far-too-many were decorated in honor of a loved one who had died of cancer! It nearly broke my heart to read some of the tributes.
When the sun set, the lumanaria were lighted and three hot hair balloons were filled in front of the main office. No hot air balloon rides, mind you, just balloons for the pretty scene hot air balloon create in the dark as they are filled. It was an amazing sight.
A marvelous setting.

Very dramatic after dark!

Once their children (I’m the eldest of five) were grown, My Mom and Dad volunteered for years at the Orfanatorio in Mazatlan, Mexico. To honor My Mother, the Tres Islas Orphanage Fund has set up a fund named “Gloria’s Kitchen”, which is exclusively for the purchase of fresh fruits and vegetables for the orphans – something My Mom always felt was lacking at the orphanage.
Today, DT and I made another donation to the “Gloria’s Kitchen” fund. If you knew My Mom, I urge you to do the same. (Print the donation form (.pdf) here, and just check the “Gloria’s Kitchen” box. Donations are sent to a US bank account and all funds are used for the kids. We have visited the orphanage many times, know the director personally and recognize this as a reputable charity!)
If you did not know My Mom, please consider making a donation to the orphanage, a cancer charity or a charity of your choice.
Until my next update, I remain, your sad correspondent.
