Merced, California: Not a very exciting report today, Kind Reader. We spent the morning on the (now decommissioned) air base running and working and spent the afternoon and evening in town with DT’s family.
A beautiful day, with sunny skies and no wind – though the temperatures did not climb much into the 50’s. It was warm enough I could run without a jacket, and I pounded out four miles on the roads around the base. One good thing about running here? There is basically no one around, so no one to laugh at an old fat lady plodding down the tarmack.
This evening the family gathered at a small Mexican restaurant, Florencio’s. Another fun evening around a table of food. Is anyone noticing a pattern here?
Two soft-shell chicken tacos with rice & beans. Basic Mexican fare. Florencio makes his beans from scratch and – though they are vegan – are absolutely full of delicious flavor.
DT ordered Beefsteak Mexicana. It is basically what he expected: highly seasoned chewy beef strips with rice and beans.
Meghan brought her boyfriend, Joe, to dinner so we could meet him. We were on our best behavior and I don’t think we scared Joe too much.

Since our family visits this restaurant often, the owner sent over plates of yummy nachos as appetizers and then delivered two massive complimentary desserts – huge vanilla ice cream balls that were rolled in (I swear) corn flakes, placed inside a deep-fried tortilla and then smothered in chocolate, caramel and whipped cream.
Each dessert came with many spoons.

Tomorrow, we continue south. One more pretty girl to visit. Until my next update, I remain, your sweet correspondent.
PS: I have posted Mom’s recipe from last night – Hawaiian Chicken with Kumquat – here.
RV Park: Castle Air Museum Family Camp (in Atwater, California). The only game in town. We always stay here. It actually used to a a parking lot – but the Air Museum added eight 50-amp full-hookup campsites. It floods during a rainstorm. No bath house. No wifi. We love it here. Dogs allowed off-leash. Very casual. Quiet.
