Bambu Bamboo Plates
One day, while shopping at our favorite local grocer, New Seasons, DT and I found the most attractive disposable plates made from bamboo! What could be more fun – just the thing for that special backyard or RVing event – and they naturally would be perfect for any tropical-themed party. The plates are made by New York’s bambu® from 100% organically bamboo grown in China. A very renewable plant, bamboo grows quickly and does not need to be replanted. bambu specifies that the bamboo species used in their products, Moso, is NOT a species eaten by the Panda – so dine away without guilt.
The bamboo veneerware will not bend or buckle under the weight of food and they biodegrade 4-6 months after disposal. We bought the plates and used them during an under-awning brunch in a campground in the California desert. Our guests really were interested in the pretty plates and the dishes performed superbly under mountains of breakfast casserole and fruits. The manufacturer says the all-occasion veneerware is “intended for single-use” and call their product the “non-paper paper plate”. We took their advise on the dinner plates, but rinsed off the larger trays that had held pastries and will use them again!
And, since the organic bamboo is not treated in any way, you can burn your dinner plate in the campfire – it’s wood!
Bambu produces not only disposable bamboo veneerware, but solid bamboo kitchen goods of all sorts – notably cutting boards, salad sets and serving trays. Disposable plates are available (in sets of eight) in 13-inch (charger or buffet plate), 11-inch dinner plate and 7 & 9-inch sizes. Two sizes of trays (sets of 4) and disposable cutlery are also available.
